The Pan Am Games are here! After years of hard work and planning, many municipalities are preparing for competition day. While opening ceremonies are scheduled for this Friday July 10th, the water polo competition began yesterday in the City of Markham.
The Pan Am and Parapan Am Games bring not only competition days to many municipalities in the GTA and Niagara Peninsula, but also a Torch Relay. For the Pan Am games, the torch travelled across more than 130 communities from May 30 until July 10. Many of those communities created a Special Event to coincide with the Torch Relay.
The Parapan Am torch will travel along the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail from August 3 through to August 7, ending with a simultaneous lighting in both Ottawa and Toronto.
For those municipalities in Ontario who have successfully executed their Torch Relay Event, we would recommend a review of the event with all parties involved in the planning and execution of the event. This could include your local police force and other emergency personnel such as fire and ambulance. How did the event play out? Was there anything that went particularly well or anything that took an unexpected turn or required the use of a Plan B? Was there anything that took more time or was a last minute rush? A post event examination of Special Events is a great way to improve and/or create new plans to manage risk.
